Swimmer Profile: Cullen Jones

The next post in a series of Swimmings most marketable athletes, this time we look at Cullen Jones.

Cullen Jones is an American olympic swimmer who is a "sprinter" specializing in racing shorter distance events. He is one of four legs in the world record holding American team in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay. He also won silver in the 50 meter freestyle in the 2012 olympics.

I met Cullen Jones once and he is an absolute BEAST. At 6'5 he is quite the figure, but could not have been a nicer guy, and you hear that all the time when people meet someone but it is very true with Cullen. That's one of the reasons Cullen is one of swimmings more marketable athletes however the main one is telling Cullen's story. Cullen only learned how to swim because at age five he almost died in a drowning accident in Pennsylvania. Going from that to an olympic gold medalist is an unbelievable story.

A Little bit on Cullen and his near drowning...

Swimmer Profile: Missy Franklin

This blog starts a series of blogs on swimmings most marketable athletes. We begin with young Missy Franklin.

During the summer olympics of 2012, the name Missy Franklin became a household one. She took the world by storm. She was on the worlds biggest stage at age 17 and did not disapoint, becoming a sensation in the process. One of the most hyped swimmers to come along in years Franklin hit the ground running in her olympic debut winning a total of five medals, four of them being gold. She swept the backstroke events winning gold in the 100 meter and 200 meter women's backstroke events. She broke the world record in the 200 meter backstroke. Here's the highlights from that swim.

Adding to Missy's obvious remarkable swimming ability is her personality that makes her a very marketable athlete. During the olympics in London, the world fell in love with her for a reason. She has a very bubbly personality, was always a great t.v interview. The fact that she was so young and relatable to young people as well made her the perfect poster child for swimming. During the olympic broadcast they even frequently played on the fact that she had not yet recieved her drivers license! To market a sport correctly you need the names/faces to do so. Missy Franklin is at the top of that list at 18 years old and a lot of swimming ahead of her.

Ryan Lochte Injured By Crazed Fan

One of swimmings more marketable athletes took a huge hit in the past week as American swimmer Ryan Lochte suffered a knee injury that will take him out of the water for some time. Lochte was rushed by an overzealous fan who jumped at Lochte attempting to fly into the arms of her favorite athlete for a big hug. Lochte, not being prepared for the hug, fell to the ground along with the fan and tore his MCL and sprained his ACL. Although people out of Lochte's camp, maintain that he is motivated towards a speedy, successful recovery; there is no doubt Lochte will miss a considerable amount of time in the water.

Heres a link to the article on USA Today that also has a great photo slideshow of sports most bizzare injuries that is worth checking out.  http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2013/11/05/ryan-lochte-injured-fan-encounter/3447101/

Lochte is often mocked by many (including myself) for his celebrity status, as well as his other business endeavors such as his failed E! reality show "What Would Ryan Lochte Do?". One thing that cannot be argued however, is that his injury is a big hit for the sport in the near future. He will be plenty fine by swimmings next premier event however for the near future swimming just lost arguably its most marketable athlete.  What a bizarre series of events, reminds me of crazed boy band or Justin Beiber fans, where will they stop.

Maybe it was one of these girls?

More moments like this...

All sports are defined by their greatest moments. The video above shows what may have been swimmings greatest moment. This race is the 4X100 meter freestyle relay from the 2008 olympics in Bejing. Just a bit of backstory going into the olympics this was one of the most built up races of the swimming portion of the olympics. The french relay and USA relay were the two heavy favorites and French swimmer Alain Bernard made headlines when he said "The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for." This was the race everyone was waiting to see, and it didn't disappoint. I will never forget the thrill of watching this live. The USA coming up huge with a comeback on the worlds biggest stage. The thing is there are moments like this in swimming that are missed all the time due to lack of media coverage. This was not only the greatest swimming moment I have ever watched but one of my more fond sports memories in general. Watch, Enjoy, and try not to get chills. Wouldn't it be great to see more of this?
